We went to  local BSJA show this morning with Katies' youngster, she takes him in the British Novice which has a maximum height of 90cms I think. She was 5th in and just wanted to use one of the practice fences in the collecting rihg a couple of times to get her horse switched on and settled. Why, oh why do you get one or two people who seem to monopolise the collecting ring and have the practice fences up at about 1.20m

It's so unfair with those who have real novice horses and just want to pop them over before they go in the ring. And why do they feel the need to jump such big fences to warm up for a novice class?

BSJA are the worst for that.  I used to take my friends daughter and she would have me standing in the middle by a jump putting it up and down and everyone comes galloping at the thing - frightening.  Then some know it all comes along and doesnt even ask if its ok but shoves it up more holes than necessary and totally ignores you.  to make matters worse they usually then just walk off and go and do their round.  I always want to shout 'oi - if you finished can you please put it back down to normal practice height!'

well done Katie btw

I don't doo showjumping but I expect they jump high in there so the ring jumps will seem easy and less likely to refuse for appearing 'smaller'. But yeh, very unfair

There is no such thing as a 'problem horse' only a problem owner.

There's an almost craze amongst a lot of younger riders at the moment of jumping stupidly high fences, I see it all the time on youtube, people anywhere from 12-20 seem to think that if they can jump 1m 20 (often without a saddle) - that shows what an AHHMMAAAZING rider they are - well maybe, that or it just shows how good your horse is at keeping you on?

It might be linked to that, but it is bl**dy annoying on there (a lot of these people have either 5yro or 17yro horses who a year ago were popping 2ft 6 happily before the 'craze' kicked in) - it appears to be another 'in fashion' thing

Maybe Madz - I think it's daft jumping big fences, i'd much rather school a horse round a few small fences with colours, fillers, doubles and stiles to educate them rather than scare them

That's exactly my view too, it really annoys me. Jumping big doesn't really represent a whole lot other than bravery/stupidity at their level - some of these riders have been in the saddle just 3 years

I'm much more impressed with people who can do just about anything on their horse - even if they're only jumping 2ft (which is big to me right now lol) - and not have to work their riding lifes around what their horse will allow them to do

Indeed! Here here... well said.

I used to showjump a lot when I was younger and that always annoyed me. I had a 14.2hh who I'd jump 5ft but only mucking about, certainly not to show off to anyone and I'd been riding years.

I hate the ****** pot hunters too, who have talented horses but go in the small classes. It's taken all the fun away!

people dont just enter a briitish novice because they are green, people work through the grades so wether there horse is capable of jumping 1.20 and entering a brittish noivce because they are producing there horses through the grades, thats probabaly why the warm up fence was big.

We produce ours and work through the grades but when you have a genuine novice which is peeping and needs a crosspole to start with and you're under pressure to get worked in as you're early in the draw, it seems mighty unfair that the odd one or two competitors need to have a practice fence up at an unjumpable height for a rank novice just starting out
