akom,

Agree completely but the striped hooves of Apps (what I assume you call humbugs) are actually stronger/harder than others. And I have trimmed and rasped enough to know that is true.

I assume it is something to do with the original breeding conditions .....Nez Perce Indians lived on very rocky ground ..........rather than the striped factor. Similarly flowing tails were not needed as flies were relatively few.

Don't know why their bits are mottled though........possibly have to ask the mares.

yes I mean the striped hooves, I affectionally call it his 'humbug' hoof as the stripes are so even it reminds me of a mint humbug!

I was brought up on 'horse, tack, you' ........a variation of 'dog, gun. you'.

What it meant was that after riding your priority was taking care of the horse, followed by looking after your tack and then you were the last to be cared for.

Has anyone else got similar things which were instilled in you so much that you do them automatically?

I can't imagine anything other than this 'Horse, tack, you'. The thought of the beasts not coming first after a hack, or a ride of some sort, is really quite ridiculous!
Last night when Widge and I finished our ride we were both baking but, as is now routine, we kept all of our kit on while we took off the saddles and bridles and then we got round to sorting ourselves out. Only once we've got all their kit off and put away do we think 'dear god I'm hungry!' and we inevitably end up at a chip shop or the pub for some grub! I mean hey, it's hungry work all this horsing around!

Yep

No foot no horse.  I also learnt the one about white feet!  Tehya has one...hmm!

I went to a riding school owned by a very old lady and I'm sure she had loads but I'll be blowed if I can think of any now!

Re horse tack you, I think the fact that I rarely eat before 9pm (if at all some nights) shows where I come in the order of importance...

i had it drummed into me from the day i was born that if we couldn't take care of the horse then we had no business being around them.

after a ride we had to see to the horse, even if we were injured! then once the horse was taken care of we had to sort the tack out, make sure it wasn't broken/damaged or dirty. sort it out if it was!

that is something that has stayed with me through the years and it irritates me when i see others not bothering about the horse.

my step daughter rode Gracie round the field one day, afterwards i told her to take her up to the barn and sort her out (she knew what i meant!). i got up there 10 minutes later to find Gracie stood in a stable with all her tack on and my step daughter sitting on her lazy butt texting someone..........i went mental for several reasons but after that i stopped her riding my horses.
