I bought a pure bred Cleveland Bay mare a fortnight ago, she is 4 years old, she's had an injury to her hock and may possibly not have a riding future ahead of her but me loving my Clevelands, bought her with a view to breeding from her. I know i'm daft but she's a good sort and one of OH's clients who's a good friend has a smashing stally called Stanhopes Dueka, he's by Stanhopes Diddicoy so after a bit of messing about, she was looking like she was in season yesterday so Dueka came and visited her today ;)

The vet has suggested trying her again on monday and possibly cover her again if she's still showing in season, after which it'll be back to the scans and stuff :rolleyes:

I'm hoping for a nice, quality middleweight with a good temperament, don't mind about the colour. Dueka is owned by my friend and I know him and like him very much. He's also very local. He show jumps, does dressage and has taken the HOYS coloured Championship a couple of times too ;)

She's driving me mad :( I got her on 5th June, have teased her every day, wednesday the stallion came to stay and she's had a smell at him every day yet STILL she's not in season :( I'm keeping a teasing chart so any changes in her behaviour aren't missed. I'm hoping she'll come into season on her own without needing the vet!

Well wow we had an amazing show season with about 7 welsh medals coming home :D
However we are having a large stock turnover :(
Ok so First we have Mikey my 148cm mares foal is sold to england :( going 3rd week in oct
Then we have his full brother Jack is sold to england again :( He will be so so so much still not sure when he is going but may be next week :'(
And lastly we have stevie going to the isle of man at the end of october :(
Mo is still trying to loan to england
Molly is not at home at the moment .
However we still have dinky, and blondie to show next year

Well it could be a busy year next year! We've decided to have May put in foal again!

So if things go the way it's hoped, we'll be having 3 new babies next spring :w00t:

Last year, we couldn't decide between Temple Ackropolis and Pembridge Minstrel, but it was loking like Ackropolis was going to the USA to stand at stud after last season and Minstrel is owned by a friend of ours. We've always fancied a May X Minstrel foal and he's getting no younger and May isn't needed for a while so the decision has been made.

She was scanned yesterday and given a Prostoglandin jab to bring her into season. The vet warned some mares will only breed every other year so we still might miss out but it's worth a try.

Does anyone know a good foal livery?

I may be getting a youngster (nothing firm yet), and I'd need a reliable place for the winter.
It's a filly, and if we get her, she'll have to move out of her current place by late autumn at the latest (she'll be weaned and everything).
So I'm putting out feelers to see if anyone knows a good place they can recommend, until about March or April, with lots of grazing and if possible some other youngsters.

She'll be about 8 months old if/when I get her.

Kitty's pregnancy diary

Well....... :D

I wasn't going to put Kitty back in foal, i was going to get the foal weaned and bring her back into work over the winter. The vet thinks we can get her sound with corrective shoeing which is being done this week but on Friday i got a call from Parco/Bobski/Abaramundi's breeder. She asked if i would be interested in putting Kitty in foal to their connemara perlino stallion who is guarenteed to produce a buckskin foal to a bay mare and if its a colt she will buy it from me :w00t:

Its now guarenteed to be a filly after Kitty's last two foals being colts but she did say she may buy a filly but would prefer a colt. Either way the foal will not be being kept by me she will either buy it or help me sell it. The hope is to produce a buckskin jumping pony, the foal should average about 15hh.

The downside is all of their stallions are only available by AI and even though we only tried once last year by AI she didnt take but took straight away by natural covering so we shall see what happens. She is having her CEM swab done on friday and we will then go from there.

Pictures to follow later of the stallion when i recieve them but i have already seen him in the flesh on my many visits there and he is a dude. He is called Duncan :hehe:

just easier if i keep all the mares in one place
we seem to have all 4 in foal ( no scanning again 2 too small molly is not allowed be scanned and natty always scans not in foal when she is )
our 21 yr old mare has either packed in since march or is in foal she has live with the stallion since he came march last year so really all we want is her to be happy how ever she breeds AMAZING foals who have gone to england however are very accident prone 3 have killed them selves in england and has only ever breed colts
so this is our news and hopefully a facebook page coming up soon :D

Bit of advice please

Ok, so most of you know Bailey by now! She's been sound for over a year now but she's still not back in full work as she finds a short bumble round the village every now and again much more enjoyable. She wants to be doing [i] something [/i] though and as she's such a good mothering mare, we wondered about putting her in foal again.

When she had Phyliss, she was too big and put her pelvis out. Her pelvis has been treated but she'll never be 'straight' like most other horses - it doesn't affect her though and she lives a perfectly happy and painfree life!:thumbs:

So, do you think her pelvis would be affected again if we were to put her to a smaller stallion (she's 15.1hh), like a little welsh or similar?
I can't decide whether it would be irresponsible to let her do something she is so good at and enjoys. We would most likely keep the foal so it's not an issue what happens to the foal, it's more my beautiful mare i'm concerned about!

My Irish sports horse Star is in foal to TRESAISON SNOW WOLF and her given due date is 14th June, which is actually 1 week 1 day away.
Today A friend and I walked across the field to look at her and we thought that she was looking good and would be quite on time to her due date.
AND THEN........
I always walk over and check on my horse around 9.30 before I go to bed and tonight I looked at her and thought she looks odd when I looked underneath she has big white splodges on her teats! So will tonight be the night??? :D

Kitty's big day

Kitty was scanned yesterday just to see how she was getting on with her cycles as she hasn't really been showing any real signs now the teaser gelding has left the yard. She is in season now!! So i spoke to the stud and they cant take her yet as their mares are still in and not enough grass through to put them out.

Sooo i have decided to go down the route of AI being she had the first scan done yesterday. Vet was back today for the second scan which showed she was a 3.36cm so they put an ovuplant in which will make her ovulate in 36-48 hours. The stud have been informed and are collecting the semen this afternoon for delivery tomorrow morning and she will then be insemminated!!

After spending last summer trying and not succeeding at getting Evie in foal i am trying not to get too excited. But i have already thought if she does not take this time then her next cycle the stud should be able to take her for natural covering.

So we shall just wait and see and hope that tomorrow is a success.

She's been fabulous! Hasnt battered an eye lid at anything I've done with her!

Wednesday 12th May:

She had her headcollar on for the very first time and went in the field for an hour. She was very good, was bombing round and tired herself out! :)

Thursday 13th May:

Had her headcollar on again and had a little wash as she pooed all down herself lol just stood and let me do it :) Went in the field for about 3 hours today in the sunshine, both girls are knackered.

Friday 14th May

She was laying down and let me put her headcollar on, walks to the field like a pro already :D bouncing along side me! Super quick learner and takes everything in her stride :)Out all day today, well most of it!

Sunday 23rd May

Belle loaded onto a trailer and showed mummy how it's done :D Nothing and I mean NOTHING AT ALL phases this little filly - she does not give a toss what you do with her as long as you scratch her bum afterwards! ;)

Couldnt ask for better!

Tuesday 24th May

Belle will now pick all for feet up and let me 'tap' the bottom (for when she sees the farrier) as long as she gets a bum scratch afterwards of course :P

Sunday 30th May

Belle had a rug on for the first time today. I didnt leave it on, just put it on (slowly) she had a scratch and a good sniff of it then I took it off again :D So pleased with her. She's now 3 weeks old :)

I put Mollys lightweight on this morning and it's raining all day and Belle snorted and shot round the field squealing and throwing a tantrum :w00t: :P

Thursday 3rd June

She had fly spray on for the first time this morning from a spray bottle. Didnt care at all! She just stood there (without headcollar) and let me do it and then let me wipe over her face with the smelly fly spray sponge :D

May's pregnancy diary

As so many of us have either bred, are breeding or thinking about it, I thought it would be useful to have our mare as an example of what happens and when.

May was inseminated on 29th April.

We don't have any pics of any of the scans so far, but here's a pic of a scan taken at the earliest time to see anything, which is 12-13days

That's what we saw when she was first confirmed in foal on 15th May when she was 16 days pregnant.

This is a pregnancy of 23days duration

as of today, 31st May, she's 32days gone, so this is what she's carrying about

Which is basically what we saw on saturday when she went ofr a heartbeat scan :heart:

ok well i have my leaving cert next year so cant ride molly much if at all so mom suggested putting her in foal toEskdale Splendid Venture father of 3 of our ponies and nattys foal
but what do you think io should do i love her and want a foal from her but i dont want an Eskdale Splendid Venture foal out of her but he is my only option :(

Can anyone tell me some of the risks of putting my mare in foal?

My mare is only a pony and my daughter rides her but has lost intrest, There is someone i know interested to buy but the child is too small at the moment and i was thinking of putting her in foal. She has had a tendon issue in the past But she has not been lame for nearly 2 years now. We would like to put her in foal and would just like to know the risks. Thanks :)

hes 3 weeks old last tues
his mam is covered again so heres hoping
well hes been out full time for last 2 and half weeks only had rain once lucky sod (our 3 year olds had loads of rain when they were foals)
headcollars on ben lead was a ejit first 2 times he fliped twice but colts always do
had a girlfirend and a baby sitter now so molly (his mom) is so happy now :D
he has a show in 3 weeks
and then he and our broodmares are out til oct when he will be gelded and wended

This has all been copied from elsewhere... but i shall keep it up to date in case anyone is interested. :)

Day 1 5th March 2010

Apache arrived home. Very quiet, reserved and nervous, however willing to have a sniff and eat some dinner. Met the girls, like's them both very much, despite Tehya wanting to beat him up.

Day 2 6th March 2010

Very much braver today and turning into a fidget so he now has 12 x 20 field shelter, had neck and withers scratched. Decided it's fun to upturn water buckets and generally make a mess.

Day 3 7th March 2010

Standing at 13.1hh. Has been scratched and rubbed most places. Upturned another bucket, but broken into last night so acceptable. Was held with headcollar for a few mins calmly. Now kissing everyone, very exciteable, likes to throw headcollars around.

Monday 8th March

Got up there this morning and he was very calm (well for him!) and called as we came across the field. He waited quietly for his breakfast and then ate all of it (first time i haven't thrown food away!) before quickly upturning his bucket to prove his point. "Ta da! All gone!" He has also learnt not to bug Tehya when she's eating as he gets eaten too. Thank the lord!

He was quite calm, if a little looky, at the broom this morning when i mucked him out but he didn't get in the way and didn't mess his bed up the second i'd laid it which was nice. He didn't try escapingt the second the board had been moved and let me refill his water buckets and get him some hay. Still very noisy when the girls are out of site.

He watched me clear out Missy's stable and we had a few cuddles and scratches.

A little later i went up the horses, hat, gloves and lead rope in tow. He let me clip the lead rope on straight away with no fuss. When pressure was applied to the line he shook his head and avoided the pressure like the plague, preferring to pull back, bash into his tub trug and try to get into the corner. However, ignoring this and by rewarding with lots of scratches and good boys he soon got the idea and aside from trying to continually call to the girls he learnt that the best place to be was beside Mummy and with his head towards her too. It wasn't fantastic but after about 10 minutes he was basically following me around and not arguing if i put pressure on the line.
Thank god.

He had some ready grass as a reward and has been left neighing to the girls to enjoy the sun and quiet.

Tuesday 9th March

Apache now has his very own grooming kit and decent lead rope which he examined and approved of this afternoon. First day properly on his own today as i was at college all day and the stable wasn't tooooo much of a mess.

Did some more leading and backing up and moving over which he seems to be catching on to.
More fingers in the mouth and touched all of his legs all the way down.

Day 6 Wednesday 10th March

Picked feet up on the front legs today.

Sunday 15th March

Apache's first day out in the field, a day not to be repeated. Resulted in him being stabled for a week as he ran through fencing.

Sunday 21st March

Apache's moving day, he moved to his new yard around the corner with new friends ISH Ron (Chestnut) and cob Splodge. He didn't load well but travelled fine, he is now getting to know his new surroundings.
Apache didn't get much dinner tonight as he was scared of the corral area.

Monday 22nd March

After a bit of beating up from Ron Apache came to me across the field today and had cuddles and breakfast.

Sunday 28th March

Today has been the best to date. One week after the move and he has walked into the corale area for his breakfast and his tea without a lead rope, with the gate opened wide all by himself in less than a minute.

He also picked all of his feet up (not for long) but all around and i'm very pleased. He has also lead the furthest he has done to date and i'm very proud of him.

He let Mum touch him between his legs and was very chilled while being scratched. Today is definitely a good day.

When turned out after dinner, he came back over to me and we had kisses and cuddles before i had to leave.

Tuesday 30th March

Very jumpy tonight, came in on the lead rope. Ate dinner, picked all four feet up, had front feet picked out and lead up the corale before going back in to the field - being lead by Mum.

me and cherry have had the most amazing break trough
she whas gone from a evil difficult to catch ***** of a mare :(
to a cuddly gentle kind easy to catch pony in the last few months and today i leaned over her and on her without her even flinching
and now she is for sale :( im going to miss him
but she will be difficult to find a owner for as she decides who she likes and my mom has neaver been that person and i have become someone to trust <3

2 of our mares (?there half-sisters) when there in foal they have stallion behaviour eg try mares, try cover mares
and we know it is the way the hormons work when these mares are in foal and vet says there nothing wrong and they carry the foals
so has anyone else had something like this ??

The liveries on some stables just by us have a section B mare and have been waiting for her to foal. She was very late and looking rather huge. Tonight she looked highly suspiciously like she intended to foal so I grabbed my video camera. I handed it to the mare owner once the mare decided to have the foal against the wall (as they do) and it was very nice to welcome the little chap into the world :D

Apache's Birthday

Apache is officially a yearling today. :D He had a special birthday boy ribbon saying "I am 1 today" on which didn't phase him at all. :) It was thundering and lightning and it was flapping all around his face and he just stood there like a dude.

We also went and played in the puddle this morning, up to our ankles and fetlocks and then we went and met a very pretty bright bay from the next field. Apache grew to about 16hh next to me and had his most handsome face on. :)

I've also had him 3 months yesterday. He's getting big!!! :D

Prepare for an overload.

Big day tomorrow

We had our May scanned for the second time this morning and she's ready to inseminate in the morning :w00t: I've never had any success with AI in the past, but there's no other way we can use the stallion we want, so here's crossing everything that she gets in foal. It's so exciting, our chunky little May having a posh, show jumping husband she'll never meet :rolleyes:

Thies is Blacklist or Nero as we call him our 4 year old Thoroughbred Stallion he is nearly 16.1hh and I suspect will grow a bit more, very good natured and a 'bit of a lad!'

I just wish I could get him to stand for a photo, I still haven't quite captured him at his best.

Bearing in mind Daisy is a rough-bred cob...carthorse if you will...14.1hh, shire sired, welsh c dam....what do you think I'd get?? She's a bit handy at jumping...useful, versatile..but not greatly talented...but the most wonderful temperament... come on...thoughts needed??

Apache's Seperation Anxiety

Any ideas of ways to get Apache over seperation anxiety?
Tonight he threatened to go through more fencing and ran into post and rail and cut his leg and thoroughly terrified himself when Ron and his owner went up to the yard. He'll walk up to the yard himself in a chilled out manner... but doesn't want to be left.

I've thought of;
Splitting their field in two so he doesn't become dependent on touching Ron... however i'm not sure that i like the idea that he can't play (although he has now started mounting Ron. :oops: ) but it'll mean they no longer "need" each other.

Using the worming field which is next to their current field and feed him in there and turn him out for periods of time in there.

Walk him to the yard and feed him there while Ron's back in the field.

Problem is... he's fine to leave Ron but can't cope any other way. The only other thing i can think of is having another gelding go in the field with him when Ron needs to go out? Ron is going to shows this summer and i can't sit in the field every time for the entire time Ron is away... Mum said he had diarhoea quite quickly after Ron left today and stressed himself out.
Ideas anyone? I can ask Becky if she can come up and lead Ron away until Apache settles and then come back, but she works full time and i work saturdays and she's meant to be going to a show soon enough?

Heeeeeeelp! Also... does anyone think gelding him would help his anxiety at all?

Anyone owned one, ridden one, know the breed well?

What do you think the 'result' would be if I crossed a Connie stallion with Jay (don't get excited it ain't happening this year) :P

Jay is 15.3 1/2hh. ISH (belived IDxTB). Connie stal ideally would be 14.3-15hh (ps photo is a stallion example not the chosen one, though he does look perfect). It would be Jays 1st foal and be for me to keep (that's the plan or should I say dream!) Am not out to produce anything big (and is unfair for a maiden imo) and I don't want anything cobby or course yet liking the idea of a bit of 'pony' in the blood.

So a good choice? or what other breeds do you think would suit?

I have always wanted a foal from her so decided now she is 10 and has been showing me some great work over the last couple of months that i would like to breed myself something for the future.

I love him, his foals look fantasic and im so excited already lol. Nomination forms and cheque has been sent, her CEM swab has come back negative now i just need some better weather to get her there but thinking i will take her May in the hope she takes first time (she has had a foal before i owned her so is fertile!!) for an April 2011 foal.
