no prob no our winters are amzing no frost and grasss keeps growing but mares come in as in foal

OT (but sort of relevant) so sorry BG ;) but the new colt that arrived at Apache's last livery was the same age as Apache but ev en bigger and looked like a solid three year old! He had been weaned in March (9 months) as he had been bred in Scotland and the winter was bad so they left them with the mares for longer! I have no idea what was left of the mare but the colt looks amazing! ;)

well this one will be about 5/6 months old
yh and they also (we find) grow bigger and stronger that way
and yh dont worry the vet does it
if they havent droped they get weaned at 6 months then we wait till there 18 months if they still havent dropped we rig op them

Wow - how young do you wean them off the mares? What do you do if the colts havent dropped yet? I'm guessing the vets castrate them and not actually you? :blink:

I didnt realise they healed better when on the mare!?

will do that
and when she has a foal she neaver gets lami at all
and cant wean foal till flys are gone as we castrate our foals then put the back on the mare for 2 weeks as they heal better
and we used to us outshine but it gave her hyvies once so stoped
will try some of your suggestions in next 2 weeks

I think once the foal has been weaned she should pick up quite nicely. I've just had to wean my foal early because she was doing my mare in and the mares picked up (once she started eating properly)

If she is prone to Lami I wouldnt put her on a field of grass - I'd give hay that's been soaked for at least an hour and give it to her little and often (seeing as you live there). Whatever you feed her you need to check on the bags that she can have it i.e. dont give her Alfa A - give her Happy Hoof instead or something similar.

erm that hi-fi senior stuff instead of hay, both of our really golden oldies get vet nuts and fibre nuts and a handful of sports horse/comp mix they are both effing fat.

erm try show improver. We put one of ours on it when it was looking a bit poor of cond. about a week later it was:w00t: fat haa

I used to feed my old horse Spillers golden years conditioning mix, (there was a maintanance mix as well) chaff and speedi beat in winter.

I have just re read your post...Didnt realise she has a foal!!

what do you feed your old ponies and horses our 17 yr old 128cm mare has been losing weight lately normally she is over weight but now she is just losing it we have put her in a better feild more grass and shelther and foal is being weaned in next 3 weeks
what would you feed her
as she is lami prone
