Obviously any injury like that particularily one given by a human is going to be horrible for the horse but from what you could tell on the news report they didnt look half as deep as his. I dont know. Seriously weird circumstances.

Anyway, this was 14 days ago now & he had his stitches out yesterday & been given the all clear to come back into work which is great & he's happy in himself. We are putting up CCTV at the yard just incase.

Hope there is no more weird circumstances

RE: Poor Landy!

We had a spate of horses being slashed in their stables a good few years ago now, put all owners on the island on high alert, they seem to be keeping this latest bout very quiet but your yard is a fair way from the other one that was targeted.

The guys horses that were slashed were only babys 1 & 3 it just makes you think what on earth would possess a person to do such a thing.

Makes me sleep uneasy at night, the only small comfort is that Bob to get to is at the very very back of our yard as in you have to go all the way through it past lots of houses and then down the track to his field at the very back so he is relativey 'safe'

Yes Bob got shaved on that yard hmm a year and a half ago now i Posted about it at the time. Though a month or so after it happened i commented on how it was starting to grow back to somone and then the very next day I looked and it appeared to have been done again. Hmmm

It's a very worrying time for you peaches :(

RE: Poor Landy!

I hope they get whoever it is. Many years ago we had a couple of horses stabbed in the area (one died) and it turned out it was a mental health patient who had 'gone on the run' and wasn't taking their medication. Very sad for the owners and very frightening for the person I'd imagine :(

RE: Poor Landy!

Yes BAHM, they agree it could be related. It might have even been by accident :ermm:
Interesting idea. There have been a few weird things happen in Jersey from time to time & infact Bob did have his moustache shaved off overnight (i kid you not!) at the same yard. But ... Landy's probably the least likely of the other two he was in with to be likely to get anywhere near a stranger that doesnt deal with him day in & day out, he's a very very cautious animal. Westie however is anyones friend & would be in there nudging away. I think its more along the lines of a sharp bit of wood, nail or something in the hedgerows we cant see.

It was pretty traumatising for him however he did it as he went into shock when we brought him into the yard to treat him, poor lad.

Definately on the mend today though ... the rain has been a god send in some ways today as its cleaned his nose beautifully & kept the flies away & he's quite happy now the swellings gone down a lot.

RE: Poor Landy!

poor lad!, but it does certainly look less swollen :)

Strange how you can't find anything...It's a very long, (and unrealisitic, really) shot, but are you sure it wasn't a person? As i understand it, its because horse's blood is more oxygenated then humans.

Just looked at that pic again, sorry if anyone found it not their cup of tea & would have prefered a gore warning. In her case, it also didn't quite go straight through but it went to the end of his nostril. Like you, she got it stitched straight away, and though she had to have the last 2 stitches done again as they kept getting caught, it has healed amazingly well.

Similar story though, can't see how he did it. It's worrying when you don't know how they've hurt themselves but you may never find out what he did :( This time of year they have their heads in the hedgerows a lot, picking berries and stuff so it could well be a sharp branch he touched on a bad angle. Thank God it wasn't his eye :w00t:

RE: Poor Landy!

Ouchy :(

I would have either panicked or passed out.

RE: Poor Landy!
Jersey Girl (25/08/2010)
His pals in the field are shod aren't they? It couldnt be a kick from a sharp edged shoe or something?
Its a possibility but when you saw the wound up close its unlikely. Its a puncture wound in the middle, quite deep & it tore across the sides. I did check all their feet just incase as until it was cleaned we werent too sure on things it was just a bl*ody mess & none of them had any visible sharp edges.

RE: Poor Landy!

His pals in the field are shod aren't they? Chilled & quite happy to slowly munch on his hay so his spirits seem high.

Gone round everywhere in field to try find the offending sharp point but cant find it so took them all out until the weekend when we can go through the field with a fine toothed comb so to speak. Vet seemed to think it could be a splintered, javelin like edge of a tree branch if there was no nails, whatever it was, it looks like it was a sharp swift cut. Were pretty hot on our fields & have just redone all the fencing so pretty bemused as to what it is but hmmm.

Thanks KER- I passed on your regards this evening ;)

RE: Poor Landy!

Ugh that my tum turn i think i would have screamed had it been me! Took off the boys rugs & saw a smudge of blood on Westie's rug & did the usual check over all three horses, count the limbs etc. No sign of anything.
Went to put fly masks on, he turned his head ...

Eeek!

Cue a phone call to the Vet, long visit, strong sedation, injections & 10 stitches.
